The yearling sales this year throughout the world have been breaking records in all sales and all levels at the market. It would appear that the bloodstock world have continually failed to read the papers. While the world faces hyperinflation and a major cost of living crisis, never mind a war in Ukraine and all the pressures on the west that that has produced; it seems a bit naff for people to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, pounds or euros on the past time of owning and racing thoroughbreds. Mind you, the cost of producing a good yearling today is huge. The first thing the breeder wants to get back is his/her investment in the stud fee to produce the yearling, which can run into hundreds of thousands. Dubawi for example now stands at £250,000. Galileo stood for far more than that if the rumours were to be believed, and that’s just two top priced stallions in the world today!
